Illumination, the festival, is artistic, big, grand and huge. It also burns lakhs of rupees in a few minutes! But that’s not what Illu should be known for. To an outsider not associated with IIT Kharagpur, Illu or Illumination is an enigma. “It must be their college fest – these IITians like to keep fancy names,” some say. But Illu is a celebration of Diwali on campus, and a very hatke celebration at that. It is an eye-opening journey, an experience that motivates every IIT KGP-ian to go back to campus every year. The aim of this book has been to cover the entire landscape of Illu, and the photographer has been able to paint the picture with as much attention to fine detail as to the panorama.
The Engineering of Illumination
"I am extremely delighted that my student Devendra Purbiya has tried to capture the event because only a passionate KGP-ian who is also an accomplished photo-artist can live up to this onerous task...He has been able to beautifully capture the various little moments of magic as well as the magic of the grand moment. While the real feeling is almost inexpressible, this book lives up to our expectation of providing the whole world a glimpse of KGP’s grand Illumination spectacle and what goes behind it. Surely many people who see this book will be encouraged to make a pilgrimage of sorts to IIT Kharagpur on Diwali night. I, who has spent a greater part of my lifetime living in the campus, both as a student as well as a teacher, welcome you all to this Photographic Illu-Magic of IIT Kharagpur. May that light which illuminates us every year delight you all too."
