The Ghats of Benaras

Postcards from the Holy City

The Eternal City is globally one of the rare and oldest places to have had continuous inhabitation. And it carries its character on its sleeves. The spiritual capital of the Hindu religion and its holy deportment has given the city a unique character and attraction. No wonder photographers from all over the world have been flocking here since early last century to catch the colours of Benaras. But Benaras never tires of them. It is forever old. Hence, forever new.

Shibnath Basu’s rare sense of location and visual penetration will one again make it amply clear why Benaras is inexhaustive, why one may have seen Benaras a hundred times over and yet one will find something of a gem in its ordinariness.
